Tourism

While the continent of Africa boasts of a myriad of natural habitat and unique tourist attractions, it has lagged behind its peers owing to poor investment as well as a failure to develop infrastructure upon which tourism hinges. To address the many challenges in the tourism sector, some countries have made significant investment to ensure that the infrastructure to create a trickledown effect that allows the overall economy to benefit.

Pre Covid-19 global contribution of Travel and Tourism was around 10% of GDP dropping to just around 5% of global GDP. This has started recovering and recorded a 21% increase in 2021. Africa’s contribution to this industry that is well over USD10 Trillion has remained subdued at just below USD120 Billion. In part, this lag has been compounded by the poor infrastructure coupled with low investment rate in the Travel and Tourism sector across most countries on the African continent.

To increase the rate at which it attracts tourists, African countries need to increase the rate of investment in this sector. Through infrastructure development support, TF is facilitating the development of the Travel and Tourism sector in Africa and ensure that the continent increases its GDP representation from this lucrative sector.
